"Reflections of a Butler"

I learned a lot of new things during the course of my study of the Magnums Butlers Training. There are two important things that I gained from this training which I can consider had added greatly to my knowledge. I did not have enough background on Food and Beverage and Housekeeping so I spent most of my time with the modules that discussed them. I was amazed by the simplicity of the tasks that I was asked to do but the results were just as great.

I cooked at home but I never paid enough attention to the importance of the equipment that I used. I learned some new ways of cooking food through the different recipes which were given as examples for practice. I also learned the diferent glassware, china and cutleries, together with their names and uses. I learned how to do a formal diner table set up, different types of table service and how to properly handle equipment. I also learned how to plan an event or function, how to expand my contacts outside and how to improve guest services.

On housekeeping, I learned how to make a bed, do turndown service, press clothes and manage wardrobe. I learned the importance of a systematic way of packing and unpacking suitcases. I also learned new things about guest services such as flower arrangement, gift wrapping and handling cigars. I never realized how difficult it was to do all these things until I got the chance to do them myself.

I never knew these things before but after going through the Training Modules, I could say that I have added more value to my profession. What mattered most to me was the satisfacion of being able to perform the tasks, learning from my mistakes and bad habits, and being able to correct them. From my constant practice and perseverance I could say I have gained the confidence to do the tasks should the need arise. The training gave me a chance to be a well rounded person in my profession because I was able to apply the things that I learned, not only to my profession, but also to my personal life. There were a lot of principles that I learned which I applied to my everyday life, like packing suitcases, shoe care, arranging the wardrobe, table set up and many more. These things not only made life simple and easy but, at the same time, added a touch of class and elegance to it.

Life is about learning and seeking knowledge so my experience with this Magnums Butlers training program does not end here. There are still a lot of things to learn and I can only do that by constant practice, correcting bad habits and being able to stand up after every mistake. As they say, "Experience is what a man does to what happens to him."
